Why Not Everyone Sees the Same Painting

Have you ever stood in front of a painting with someone else and realized you were seeing completely different things?

One person notices sadness. Another sees hope. A third is captivated by the colours, while someone else walks past without feeling anything at all.

Who's right?

Perhaps everyone is.

I don't believe a painting carries one fixed meaning waiting to be discovered. Instead, I think every viewer completes the work through their own experiences. We don't arrive in front of a canvas as blank pages. We bring our memories, beliefs, fears, values, culture, and everything life has quietly taught us.

Communication works in much the same way. We understand each other more easily when we share similar experiences and a common frame of reference. Without that shared ground, even the simplest message can be interpreted in completely different ways.

Paintings are no different.

That is why I rarely try to explain exactly what my work "means." Of course, every painting begins with my own idea, but once it leaves the studio, it starts a new life. The conversation is no longer only between me and the canvas. It becomes a conversation between the painting and the person standing in front of it.

Some people see beauty.

Others see discomfort.

Some discover parts of themselves they hadn't expected to meet.

None of these responses are wrong.

For me, the most meaningful moments happen when someone tells me, "I don't know why, but this painting won't leave my mind." That is the moment when art stops being decoration and becomes an experience.

Perhaps that is also why I continue to paint. Not to give answers, but to create a space where questions can exist.
